We have our first leader!

On the morning of December 21, the first tag to report appeared at the surface. The tag happened to be from Fish 1 - the first black marlin tagged in the Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic event. This big 900-lb. marlin was caught by angler Andrey Grigoriev and tagged by Richard Ellis on the Moana III. The tag reported from a point 267 nautical miles (494 km) east of where it was initially tagged, after 78 days at liberty.

Although we always hope for tags to go the full duration of their programmed deployment (120 days in this case), it's always great to have a tag come up and start uploading data. The tag will continue to transmit data for the next week or so, providing information about where the marlin went and what it was doing during the time since it was initially tagged.
